Adjunct Professor Alanna Geary (Deputy Chair)

Adjunct Professor Alanna Geary is Executive Director of Nursing and Midwifery Services (EDNMS) for Metro North Hospital and Health Service. Alanna commenced work at the Royal Brisbane Hospital (RBH) in 1984 after completing her general nursing training in Gympie the same year. In 1987, she commenced her midwifery training at Royal Women’s Hospital, returning to RBH in 1988. Prior to being appointed to the EDNMS position in March 2015, Alanna was Nursing Director of RBWH’s Cancer Care Services, a position she held for just over 10 years, and this then evolved into her being appointed as the Cancer Care Services Directorate Stream Lead for Nursing. Among many achievements in leading a strong Cancer Care nursing team, Alanna created the vision, strategy and led the implementation of the Cancer Care Nursing Services Professorial Precinct and lead the establishment of a dedicated Cancer Care Nursing Research Unit. In December 2014, this initiative was awarded a Premier’s Award for Excellence in Leadership. Other initiatives have included the professional nursing management of a robust Clinical Trials Unit for Cancer Care Services, and changing models of care to assist in the goal of becoming a world class cancer service. Now as the EDNMS and with senior nursing leaders here at RBWH and MNHHS, Alanna plans to acknowledge strong traditions, build on past successes and ensure that nursing services at RBWH and Metro North remain contemporary and cutting edge.
