Susan Buckley, Chair of the RBWH Foundation board

We take great pleasure in introducing Susan Buckley as our new Chair of the RBWH Foundation Board. With more than 35 years’ experience in financial markets and leadership, Susan is well placed to guide the RBWH Foundation in its support of life-saving medical research and excellence in patient care at Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital (RBWH).

In her current role of Managing Director, Liquid Markets Group at QIC, Susan leads a team of 30 investment professionals managing $27bn on behalf of Government, Superannuation, Insurance and NFP clients in cash and fixed income portfolios as well as near $100bn in overlay mandates.

Susan said it was an honour to use her extensive corporate skills and experience to support the hospital which has played a central role in her family’s health care since childhood.

“I remember going to the RBWH from a very early age – fortunately as a visitor – as the ‘go to’ hospital for our family from the Darling Downs for complex and literally life-saving care,” said Susan.

“The dominant physical presence of the RBWH, as the beating heart of the Herston campus, often reminds me of those visits as a youngster, how far medical treatments have advanced and triggers enormous pride as a Queenslander to witness such excellence and innovation in health happening at our doorstep.”

Susan joined the RBWH Foundation Board in 2018 and has most recently served as Investment Committee Chair.

“It is amazing to see the fruition of the hard work of many and ongoing philanthropic support for world-leading medical advances in infectious diseases, mothers and babies research, cancer treatments, Burns, Trauma, Neurology, Intensive Care Unit (ICU) family support and so many other areas,” said Susan.

“The donor is central to our strategy at the Foundation – to connect, engage and inspire through the visible impact of their philanthropy in advancing patient care and medical research, in those areas of greatest need and that governments haven’t the budgets to fund.”

The passion of outgoing Board Chair, Leona Murphy, for the health care sector has been inspirational over the past five years. Leona’s expertise as a senior executive in ASX Top 20 listed companies and recognition as one of Australia’s Top 100 Women of Influence (Australian Financial Review, 2015) has proven invaluable, particularly throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and establishment of the RBWH Foundation Coronavirus Action Fund.

Leona’s expertise will not be lost to the Foundation as she will remain on as a valued Board Member and Patron of the RBWH ICU patient-family program, WeCU.
